A Raft of Loons

Spotted and photographed by Gerald Hewitt — April 14, 2010

When loons gather together as they migrate, this ad hoc community is called a "raft." Scientists think that rafting helps loons feed more efficiently. If they are feeding in groups then they are not spending their time chasing off other loons who are intruding on their feeding area. Sharing a space makes more sense because then everyone can spend their time eating. (info from a loon expert.)
