Good News on the Water Front...December 22, 2003

Gary Scott O.D.M. (Official Dam Master) reports a water level of 26 inches at the outlet, He has removed one of the control boards and we have an excellent flow. If the weather is as pleasant as predicted for the holiday week we'll be cleaning up some debris from the blast and working to maintain maximum flow. Considering the rain and snow since the big boom, the dropping water level is is very welcome news.

Fergie's unofficial measurement at his camp indicates the water has dropped 7 inches (28 million gallons) I wonder if we have an expert in our lake community who could explain the difference in measurements? Is it possible the water stacks up as the outlet narrows? Gary has observed that on the cold days when no run off occurs, the lake drops about an inch, on the sunny, warmer days there is runoff from the shores where the ground is saturated or frozen and the level drops less.

We've had lots of compliments on our efforts and I'd like to mention again what an important part of the the "Big Boom" Frank Langevin was. He set up the meeting between the DEC, St. Lawrence Zinc and the Lake Association to get our permits, scheduled Mike Greenhill to detonate the charges and made arrangements for the explosives - all in about 72 hours! With the weather we've had since, the timing couldn't have been better and Frank deserves the credit for hustling us along. He also spent the entire day climbing over the dams and cajoling Mike to "double the load" - It was entertaining to follow his commentary and it's good to know we have another friend with genuine concern for the Lake's well being.

Today was a perfect day at Sylvia for winter visitors, nine inches of untouched snow for cross country skiing. 32 pleasant degrees in the woods, out of the wind. Canadian geese swimming on the lake which has some ice on the West Shore and towards the Mansion Grounds. Gary reported a flock of about 200 snow geese flew over and were quite a sight.
