Water Level Update- January 3, 2004
We cleaned a good deal of debris from the main dam, then went upstream and opened up new dams near the old beaver tube. The beavers had done a good deal of cutting in that area, but it seemed only a half hearted attempt to rebuilt the dams. At that point Ferg was ready to call it a day (SU/Michigan ballgame was in progress) but the rest of the crew was determined to check out Caswell's swamp. We opened a new channel and a good flow was established. There is a need to clean up the downed cedars in that area. Although we encountered depths of 4 feet in the swamp grass - the crew stayed dry and the efforts are appreciated. The unofficial main lake water level has dropped more than 8 inches since the big boom - less than 3 inches of water are crossing the cement portion of the outlet dam. With temperatures of 21 below zero (good timing Gary!) predicted for Wednesday night, runoff should be at a minimum and the level should continue to drop. Tim Prashaw is monitoring beaver activity and has some agressive ideas for reducing their population. (reported by G. Ferguson)
