Water Level Update- January 3, 2004

Our Official Dam Master (Gary Scott) should be down South by now and we hope to keep him updated through these reports. On Saturday, Jon Jackson and Harold Gotham joined Ferg to cleanup the outlet and check the water flow. We all agreed we need to get some young people involved in this effort but we're not sure we could find a crew with as much energy! The photo op of the day was missed, but when all three guys piled into the 8 foot jon boat and cruised back down the creek, it was an interesting adventure and would have made a good photo.

We cleaned a good deal of debris from the main dam, then went upstream and opened up new dams near the old beaver tube. The beavers had done a good deal of cutting in that area, but it seemed only a half hearted attempt to rebuilt the dams. At that point Ferg was ready to call it a day (SU/Michigan ballgame was in progress) but the rest of the crew was determined to check out Caswell's swamp. We opened a new channel and a good flow was established. There is a need to clean up the downed cedars in that area. Although we encountered depths of 4 feet in the swamp grass - the crew stayed dry and the efforts are appreciated.

The unofficial main lake water level has dropped more than 8 inches since the big boom - less than 3 inches of water are crossing the cement portion of the outlet dam. With temperatures of 21 below zero (good timing Gary!) predicted for Wednesday night, runoff should be at a minimum and the level should continue to drop. Tim Prashaw is monitoring beaver activity and has some agressive ideas for reducing their population. (reported by G. Ferguson)
