High Water Update- December 5, 2003

This morning Dave Lockwood, Bill deLorraine, Gary Scott, Frank Langevin and Gale Ferguson met with representatives of St. Lawrence Zinc Co. and the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation. After a study of aerial photos and topographic maps our water level control committee presented it's plan for increasing the flow rate at the outlet in order to lower the lake level. Many docks are currently submerged and some camps could suffer ice damage at current levels.

After an inspection of the area below the railroad culvert on the East Shore road the DEC issued a permit to open the water way and discourage the beavers. This weekend if materials are available and a licensed explosive expert can be arranged the main blockage (see photo below) will be removed and the current 8 foot channel widened to 30 feet.

As a stipulation of our permit, the water must be released in a gradual fashion so we will be placing the control boards in the man made dam at the outlet. Our goal is to lower the lake level 10 to 12 inches in the next two weeks and additional action will be taken as necessary. (reported by G. Ferguson)
