Lake Lore

High Water Update- November 30, 2003

Mother Nature and/or the weatherman joined forces with the beavers over the weekend and the lake level actually rose to a record high for this time of year. On Friday we were treated to occasional showers between the downpours of rain and Saturday and Sunday 3 to 4 inches of snow created a winter wonderland. The level which had dropped 4 inches between Sunday and Thursday came back up 5 to 6 inches...the measurments are inexact because of the 30 mile an hour winds and 1 to 2 foot waves rolling across Fergie's dock.

Because of the tremendous amount of rain we had in October and November, the ground is saturated and runoff from the shoreline increases the effect of any rainfall.

Our dam committee is on hold while the Town of Fowler and private nuisance animal control folks do their thing. If we can maintain a strong flow, even with the 10 degree temperature predicted for this week, the outlet shouldn't freeze up and the level should improve. A brief cruise around the countryside with a look at Matoon Creek and the Oswegatchie River made it obvious we aren't the only ones with excessive water supplies. (reported by G. Ferguson)
